Song of the Week: This is the Stuff

January 29, 2011

Francesca Battistelli's new album is coming out March 1st, but the song This is the Stuff is one of her special preview songs. She's one of my fave artists. You gotta love her. The simplicity of this music fits the words. And the lyrics? The first verse is exactly what happens to me. All the time... Enjoy!

I've lost my keys in the great unknown
And call me please 'Cuz I can't find my phone

Chorus: This is the stuff that drives me crazy
This is the stuff that's getting to me lately
In the middle of my little mess
I forget how big I'm blessed
This is the stuff that gets under my skin
But I gotta trust You know exactly what You're doing
It might not be what I would choose
But this is the stuff You use

45 in a 35
Sirens and fines while I'm running behind
Whoa

This is the stuff that drives me crazy
This is the stuff that's getting to me lately
In the middle of my little mess
I forget how big I'm blessed
This is the stuff that gets under my skin
But I gotta trust You know exactly what You're doing
It might not be what I would choose
But this is the stuff You use

So break me of impatience
Conquer my frustrations
I've got a new appreciation
It's not the end of the world

This is the stuff that drives me crazy
This is the stuff
Someone save me
In the middle of my little mess
I forget how big I'm blessed
This is the stuff that gets under my skin
And I've gotta trust You know exactly what You're doing
It might not be what I would choose
But this is the stuff You use

Listen to this song here.

Book-Ratings and Pages

I'm editing my pages. As you can see, my 'Mission' page has disappeared, merged into my 'Dance' page. I also decided to remove my 'Books' page (though I may decided I can't do without it, and it'll re-appear), and just post about books I've been reading every now and then, and label them "Book-Ratings." Oh, and by the way: many of my descriptions are taken from the books. For right now though, here is my 'Books' page edited down to a post:

January 18, 11~ The Choice
Author: Carolyn
Description: Actually a sequel to the novel, The Challenge. This is an amazing book. It's a novel, and the characters in it go through a process of courtship that is truly beautiful to behold. They follow G-d and all His commands, through hardships, etc. This is especially a beautiful book because the heroine of this particular sequel is one of those luke-warm Christians who is stand-offish with her father becomes one of those Christians on fire for G-d with a deep love and understanding of grace. There is some romance in this book, making it a good one for mother and daughters. Ecclesiastes 3. '
Rating: 6 stars. Yes.

January 12, 11~ The Challenge
Author: Carolyn (she doesn't write under a last name)
Description: David Jensen has waited years and years to find a wife, one whom the L-rd especially points out to him. As he visits a ranch one day, he hears the owner's daughter, a young woman named Hope, praying for the exact same thing he has prayed for all these years.  Later that week, a command is given David when Hope is in trouble and he wants to help her: Don't touch her until the wedding.

December 10~ The Daybreakers
Author: Louis L'amour
Description: Orrin Sackett had to be pushed into a fight. But Tyrel Sackett was born to trouble. The night Tye stepped between his brother and a bullet changed them both forever. Now their trail pointed west, to a lawless frontier town called Sante Fe. Orrin took the job of marshal, while Tye commanded respect without a badge. When a loose end from their past turns up, one brother will be forced to revert to his old ways-if the other's dreams are to be realized.
Rating: 4.8 stars. It was good, it was just... well, you have to read it to understand it. Perhaps it's just me.

December 10~ How Could a Loving G-d...?
Author: Ken Ham
Description: This is a book that helps answer the questions, "Is G-d indifferent to my suffering?" "How do I resolve this anger at G-d?" "Why didn't G-d prevent this from happening?" Ken Ham makes clear the answers found in the pages of Scripture- powerful, definitive, and in a way that helps our hearts to go beyond mere acceptance. When you grasp the reality of original sin- and all that it means- it creates a vital foundation for your heart to finally understand what follows.  (Taken from book)
Rating: 5 stars

December 3/10~ The Christmas Sweater
Author: Glenn Beck
Description: This is a fairly new novel, but a wonderful one. Glenn Beck weaves important truths into his true story through the eyes of a poor boy. It's another cry book, but it's spectuacular.
Rating: Ten stars.

November 29/10~ Ordeal by Innocence
Author: Agatha Christie
Description: Two years after a person is convicted of the crime, and is now dead, a mysterious Doctor Calgary returns proving the guilty innocent. He thinks the house would be glad to have the boy found innocent, but he is dead wrong, because they now must find among themselves the real killer.

Rating: 4.5 stars
November 10~ Uncle Tom's Cabin
Author: Harriet Beecher Stowe
Description: The story of a slave named Tom. Devout and loyal, he is sold and sent down south, where he must endure brutal treatment as a slave. Amazing book!
Rating: 5 stars.

October 10/10~ Johnny Tremain
Author: Esther Forbes
Description: This is a novel (that could have happened) that takes place just before the Revolutionary War. Johnny Tremain is a young apprentice silversmith, and gets caught up in a dramatic involvement with James Otis, John Hancock, Paul Revere, and John and Samual Adams. Johnny is swept along by the powerful currents that will lead to the Boston Tea Party and the Battle of Lexington- and then to an important discovery in Johnny's own life.
Rating: 5 stars. This book is now added to my list of favorites~! It's a cry book, but at the same time, it is one of the best reads ever!

October 1/10~ Tom Sawyer Detective
Author: Mark Twain
Description: Tom and Huck go on a "grand" vacation to Uncle Silas's house in Mississippi, but every inch of the trip draws the boys deper into a tangled web of dark deeds: a mysterious stranger, a long-lost twin, a vanished farm hand... how does it all add up? Mysterious!
Rating: 4.5 stars

September 25/10~ King of the Hill
Author: A.E. Hotchner
Description: A memoir of a young boy living in St. Louis during the Depression. It's a sad picture of life back then.
Rating: 4 stars. I loved the ending. But there was a lot of strong language in this book...

September 21/10~ To Have and To Hold
Author: Mary Johnston (Wrote a post on her...)
Description: I'm not exactly fond of romance novels- but this one is amazing- and wholesome. It's from a Christian perspective, and a runway ward of the king of England has to choose to either submit to the king's unlawful decree or to stay true to her husband.
Rating: 6 stars! You must read this book!

September/10~ The Crucible
Author: Arthur Miller
Description: Placed during the Salem witch trials in 1692. Each inhabitant of the small village believe unquestioningly in their own sanctity- however, that belief turns poisonous when a vengeful teenager accuses a rival of witchcraft- and then those accusations multiply to consume he entire village of Salem.
Rating: 5 stars. It's written in a play format, which I liked, because someone was always talking. There were a load of great points and themes throughout the book as well. And it ended on an amazing note, though a sad one.

September 17/10~ The 5,000 Year Leap: A Miracle that Changed the World
Author: -
Description: The Principles of Freedom 101:-)
Rating: 5 stars!

September/10~ The Freedom Factor
Description: A book about a man trying to add an amendment to the Constitution. What happens? A signer of the Constitution, Nathaniel Gorham, comes back to change his mind... and then when that fails, he takes him into the future to understand just what this new amendement can do to the U.S.'s freedoms.
Rating: 4 stars. There was some pretty cheesy romance. Bleh.

August 26/10~ Wonders Never Cease
Author: Phil Callaway
Description: This novel had some hilarity, but added suspense and mystery entwined. Phil Callaway is hilarious!!! The end was even better, as it showed how a teenage atheist found his way to Christ through the ups and downs of his atheist-turned-Christian friend.
Rating: 5 stars all the way!

August/10~ Cymbeline
Author: Shakespeare :D
Description: Follows the story of Imogen and her troubles along the way.
Rating: 4.5 stars

July 12/10~ Sir Knight of the Splendid Way
Author: Lamplighter
Description: Rather like '"Pilgrims' Progress," except the latter was just a tad more interesting. It was an excellent read, and very meaningful.
Rating: 5 stars

July 5/10~ Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution
Author: Ji-Li Jiang
Description: The memoir/biography of a girl living during the cultural revolution time period... what thoughts were put into her head, and how she changed- not necessarily for the best, but not for the worst, either. It had a rather sad, yet heart-felt touch to it, and it was very, very good writing.
Rating: 4 stars. I strongly disliked the way the book ended. The future for the girl looked rather bleak, and though it seemed written for the sole purpose of a journal/memoir (which I can appreciate), the enjoyment level was low. Of course, I feel the same way when I'm reading these kind of books. It was an overall good read- and it did make you think about how great our freedoms are in the U.S.

June-July/10~ Epicenter
Author: Guess who? Rosenberg, of course:)
Description: Actually, this book is a work in progress. It's about how the Bible's prophecies are/have been fulfilled. My friend's and I have been discussing this particular book, and I think that it makes it twice as good being able to discuss the contents.
Rating: 5 stars, as of right now...

June 30/10~ The Ezekiel Option
Author: Joel Rosenberg
Description: Thriller, that I can give it, but there's a lot more to this one than the last two. It has loads of stuff from Ezekiel in it!
Rating: 5 stars! And I would give it six, but I don't want to break my rule!

June 27/10~ The Last Days
Author: Joel Rosenberg
Description: Wanna take a guess? Thriller
Rating: 4.5 stars. It was good, just not as good as the last one.

The Princess Adelina
Author:? But you can get it through VisionForum's website.
Description: A "Queen Esther" story. Very, very, very good examples of the virtuous woman.
Rating: 5 stars, though the book was a tad boring in the beginning.

June 23/10~ The Last Jihad
Author: Joel Rosenberg
Description: Excellent thriller. Considering I read it in one night, I mean excellent! Actually, the first thriller I've read, and I plan on reading the rest of the series.
Rating: 5 stars, all the way! *****

April/10~ The Canterbury Tales
Author: Geoffrey Chaucer
Description: A set of tales that were composed on Chaucer's pilgramige to the Canterbury Cathedral.
Rating: 5 stars.

A Midsummer Night's Dream
Author: William Shakespeare
Description: A true comedy, intriguing, and full of good language/rhetoric. It does have a lot of humor, but I think putting on the play makes it come to life even more.
Rating: 5 stars.

The Count of Monte Cristo
Author: Alexandre Dumas
Description: Actually a little on the sad side of things. One of the best books I've read, though.
Rating: Based on my enjoyment level, 4.5 stars. On a written level, I think Dumas is an amazing author, hence 5 stars!

Do I Have a Mission?

January 28, 2011

To my Loverly Readers: This is a little essay/speech I wrote for my Key of Liberty Class (KoL). The topic is Do I Have a Mission. Let me know your thoughts...

Do I have a mission? Do I have a purpose in life? That is what many people ask themselves today, and sadly, most of the time many think that no, they don’t have a purpose, they don’t have a mission. Many of those persons who say no to this question are non-believers, atheists. Because if you notice, many religions teach that of course you have a purpose! These examples include Mormonism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, etcetera. Of course, there are exceptions in these religions, such as in Hinduism, it all depends on what caste, or your status quo, that you are in that dictates your purpose.

Today I’m going to be speaking to you on missions and purposes from a Christian perspective, because that is where the whole idea of purposeful living originated. Psalm 139 tells us that G-d has created us with a purpose in life from the very start. “Before you were in your mother’s womb, I knew you.” Isn’t it wild to think about G-d thinking thousands of years ahead of time when He created the world about us??? That sure makes me feel small and insignificant- the Creator of the Universe planned and prepared a job for me to do… and now I have to fulfill it. That one thought and feeling fills me with awe. Ephesians 2:10 tells us that G-d prepared in advance works for us to do. Notice the word for. G-d doesn’t need our help in these things, but He’s created works for us to do not for Him, but really I think for ourselves. G-d already has a plan and it will follow through no matter what, but the awesome thing about that verse is that He uses us, even when we know He doesn’t need us. Period.

Now I’m going to take you on my little bunny trail… what is my mission? I truly believe my mission is to honor G-d above all else, as what He ordained me to be. I don’t quite know what exactly that is yet. I know I will fulfill His plan for me as I serve Him now being a keeper-at-home, and later a helpmeet to my future husband, and mother to my children. But what about “the bigger picture?” Well, I just don’t know. G-d may simply want me to be an example to my family. Or G-d may call me somewhere else… a missions trip to India like my hero Amy Carmichael? Serving the L-rd through acting, music, or another passion? The list could go on and on. But the only thing that matters is that He will call me to a certain place, and I may either think it by accident, or know it is Him, but all in all, I will end up where He wants me to be. I read something somewhere once that said, “G-d’s plans are never interrupted by our mistakes.”

Imagine G-d saying in heaven, “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have fulfilled the purpose I gave to you before the beginning of time, and served Me above all else.” And when that happens, what a beautiful day that will be.

What about you? What do you feel are your callings/missions in life? Any thoughts to add to this?

I'm Happy:)

Song of the Week: Promise My Prayers

January 21, 2011

Song of the Week: Promise My Prayers, by Point of Grace, featuring Rachel Lampa.  I was first introduced me to this song a few days ago, though I've been a fan of Point of Grace for about eight or nine years. They are so inspiring, and I  enjoy their music so much:)

I'll cover, I'll cover you, I'll cover

Hey now you know it's true
After all that we've been through
You can count on me
When it comes down to the end
I will always be your friend

No matter where you go
I want you to know now

Chorus:  I promise my prayers
I promise my heart
I'll be thinking of you
Wherever you are
When the daylight is done
When the night is so dark
When I cannot be there
I promise my prayers

Down each road we take
We're joined together when we pray
No matter where life leads
I will lift you up
You'll be covered by His love
The angels will find you
I'm here to remind you now

(Chorus)

I'll cover, I'll cover you, I'll cover

Beyond our understanding
His hand is moving and we stand amazed
I pray His love will guide you
I know He's there beside you always

(Chorus)

Think of Phillipians 1:4-6. Be sure to look it up!

Guess What?

January 20, 2011

Guess What?  I'm getting my braces off on Februrary the 10th, which is exactly 21 days away- three weeks, and the morning before TBC, no less! Huzzah! (Tiff, we must needs start planning for my braces-off party=D)

Guess What? Hannah R. and myself are off to our first full camp with MrJ on February 4th-6th. And let me tell you, we both are thrilled =) *Countless smiley faces*
Alexandrea and Isabel at Shakespeare Competition

Guess What? Alexandrea lost her last tooth this morning... ooh, the braces get to go on her pretty soon here;) She's so happy about that that I just had to post about it, even though I don't care to mention the word "orthodontist" more than once in my post. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like my orthodontist, it's just that... welllllll. When you've had braces for as long as I have, you just are happy about getting them... off.  Yes. So.

Guess What? I may be doing Shakespeare with Angela and the Shakespeare troup after all this year! !!!!!!!! Yeah! I'm soooo excited *More countless smiley faces*

Guess What? After getting home from the Concordia Challenge 2011 (located at Concordia University, Irvine), I'm pleased to announce that many of the top finalists were from "our" (I must remember to say 'the' Speech and Debate Club (namely, Set Apart), down here in the desert, placing very high in many different events. Huzzah!

Guess What? My photography "business" is open: yep! You can find the blog, Writing Through Light, here. It's not entirely ready yet, but it's getting there. So far many of my photoshoots are of Grace-Hope. It's actually mainly samples, same as you find on my Photography Page, but hopefully I'll be expanding it. I love to practice on anything and anyone, so if you're interested in getting non-professional pictures taken of you, let me know, and we'll have a blast:)

Okay, I think that's just about all the news I can think of right now... ta-ta!

Now that the finalists are published you can go to the sidebar, where I've posted this loverly art, and vote on the poll. In other words, the decision is up to you on who should win this first photography contest.. you can get as many people to vote for you as you can. Now. Go!

Thanks for participating in my contest, everyone! Have a great week:)

Song of the Week: Show Me

January 12, 2011

The Song of the Week is Show Me, by Audrey Assad. I recently discovered her a few months ago, and though she's fairly new, she's become popular pretty quick, singing with such artists as Chris Tomlin. Her voice is beautiful, and you can tell how passionate she is. Love her.

You could plant me like a tree beside a river

You could tangle me in soil and let my roots run wild
And I would blossom like a flower in the desert
But for now just let me cry

You could raise me like a banner in the battle
Put victory like fire behind my shining eyes
And I would drift like falling snow over the embers
But for now just let me lie

(Chorus:) Bind up these broken bones
Mercy burn and bring me back to life
But not before you show me how to die

Set me like a star before the morning

Like a sun that steals the darkness from a world asleep
And I'll illuminate the path You've laid before me
But for now just let me be

Bind up these broken bones
Mercy burn and bring me back to life
But not before You show me how to die
No, not before You show me how to die

So let me go like a leaf upon the water

Let me brave the wild currents flowing to the sea
And I will disappear into a deeper beauty
But for now just stay with me
God, for now just stay with me

Show Me, by Audrey Assad

Song of the Week: Meant to Be

January 5, 2011

Hey ya'll! I know my Poetry Tuesday went down under after the first couple of tries=P  SO, I've decided to do a "Song of the Week" instead. We'll see how it goes; it may soon become song of the every two weeks, or even song of the month. I'll be posting the song of the week any time during the week. Here we go:

Today's Song of the Week is: Meant to Be, by Steven Curtis Chapman. Not only is it well-written, he sings it with so much passion. It seems to be based off of Jeremiah 29:11 (header of this blog).  Love this song:

Long Before You Drew Your First Breath

A Dream Was Coming True
God Wanted to Give A Gift To The World
So He Wrapped It Up In You

Every Step That You’ve Taken
Every Move That You Make
Is Part Of His Plan

Chorus
You Were Meant To Be Touching
The Lives That You Touch
And Meant To Be Here
Making This World So Much More
Than It Would Be Without You In It

You Were Meant To Be Bringing
The Gifts That You Bring
And Singing The Songs
You’ve Been Given To Sing

You Are Perfectly, Wonderfully,
Beautifully Meant To Be
You Were Meant To Be

Long Before You Took Your First Fall
You stumbled to the ground
God started telling the story of you to the angles around
Every failure and victory
Everything inbetween
Its all in his hand

(Chorus)

For every breath that your taking
And every move that you make
It’s a meaningful life you’ve been given
Live it well
You Were Meant To Be Touching
The Lives That You Touch
And Meant To Be Here
Making This World So Much More
Than It Would Be Without You In It

You Were Meant To Be Bringing
The Gifts That You Bring
And Singing The Songs
You’ve Been Given To Sing
You Are Perfectly, Wonderfully,
Beautifully Meant To Be
 You Were Meant To Be

If you want to hear the music, here's the link. But if you don't want to look it up, it's currently the last song on my playlist. Enjoy!

Past Highlights of 2010...

January 2, 2011

Happy 2011, Everyone!
So, I decided to go back on each month of this past year, and figure out the highlights of each month. 'Tis going to be fun!

So read on:
~January~
This month started out with a bang... and several New Years Resolutions- which pretty much failed after the first couple months, if that. :P This year my "New Years Resolution" was this: I'm not going to make New Years' Resolutions, I'm going to make goals. Started HaYesod study- fabulous insights!
~February~
We celebrated Alexandrea's 11th Birthday with a cooking party! I'm sure no one knows she likes to cook;) *wink, wink* I also started Shakespeare again- had Midsummer Night's Dream Auditions, and became known as 'Peaseblossom' and 'Hippolyta.'  Played much tennis with Karah. Started this blog =D (My blogoversary is coming up...)Woot-woot!

~March~
Took CHSPE, passed literature and grammar sections, and missed five problems for math :P. Went to the beach with Tiffani, had a wonderful time with my sweet sister, Ball-kidded for BNP Paribas Open.
~April~
April- Daddy's birthday, followed by mine (yeah, fourteen!!!) Played bunco at a teen-scene on my birthday. Went to Junior Prom with Tiffani, Elissa, and Karah.
~May~
First four Midsummer Night's Dream performances. Did show down here in Palm Desert, exciting! Played Peaseblossom three times and Hippolyta once. Anniversary of King Lear. My hair actually became my definition of "long," much to my joy. Played actress "Natasha Gibson" at end-of-the-year ritz party/teen-scene.

~June~
Finished Midsummer Night's Dream performance as Hippolyta. Sadly bid farewell to my dear Shakespeare buddies for the summer, and some for a looooonnnnng time. =( Re-decided I don't like partings at all. Finished GBS with Karah, Tiffani, and Hannah R. Went to Tiffani's and Elissa's highschool graduation. Made purses with Tiffani, Alexandrea, and Lexi (by the way.. the purse business is expanding... literally:D)

~July~
Was informed by Shakspeare instructor Angela about Shakespeare competition in October. Jumped for joy! Went to "audition" for MrJ Kid-Possible team with Lexi and joined~! Swam. Did geometry. Swam some more. Went to the beach for a day. Was informed that my sweet sister Tiffani was moving. Sobbed, cried, wrote lots in journal, and sobbed some more. NOOOOO! Completed "beloved" geometry. Marmee opened music studio. Started teaching piano lessons.

~August~
AUNTY EUNICE CAME HERE!!! Went to the mountains for the day. Marmee's birthday. Was informed by orthodontist that I get my braces off in November. Jumped for joy again! Said sad goodbye to Aunty Eunice and family. Re-re- decided I strongly disliked partings. Went to Carlsbad for a week. Celebrated the 2nd anniversary of owning Chester and Lilly. Auditioned for fashion show. Was picked for fashion show. Took Tiffani and Ms. Traci to new home. Sobbed the whole way home. Re-re-re-decided that I hated partings. Wrote lots more in journal. Started Shakespeare once again.

~September~
Shakespeare again. Re-registered for CHSPE. Celebrated Rosh Hashana. Started teaching piano lessons. Celebrated Yom Kippur. RSVP'd for teen-scene year-kick-off party- is playing Miss Crimson, Shakespearian actress :) Went to orthodontist for one of the last phases of braces. Began piano. Preparing for Shakespeare competition.Visited Tiffani, and had a "simply marvelous" time! (Inside joke for those of you who don't understand the quote marks, which I'll share later.)
~October~
Definitely Shakespeare Competition was one of the biggest highlights of October (became known as Imogen in Cymbeline) (Yes!!!!). Had my dear girlfriends Karah, Tiffani, and Lexi over to prepare for the Western teen-scene, where I became known as Miss Crimson (Shakespearian actress) at teen-scene year kick-off party, Karah using her fantastic skills as a hairdresser on us, and believe me, she is fantastic! Took my mid-terms for Williamsburg Academy.

~November~
Didn't get my braces off:/ Made a mid-calculation:( Went to a students apologetics conference and saw Joel Rosenberg and Lee Strobel:) 'Twas fabulous. Tiffani, Kristin, and I became star-struck for the first time, after Rosenberg signed our books.

~December~
Canned apples at Garcia's home. Chester got married to Tinkie... hopefully they'll be breeding soon!Celebrated Hanukkah... lots of fun. Was informed by orthodontist that I am going to get my retainer in January!!! Get to do MrJ at Lake Arrowhead in February. YAY!!! Winter break. New Year's. And Cassie is coming out (hopefully!) from MO next month.

AND, that is where it ends. I now have six piano students; will be getting my retainer imprints in 8 days (yippee!). We're going up to Alpine in February. And Cass is hopefully coming out this month. Happy 2011, ya'll.
It's going to be an amazing year!

Picniking.

Hey, I know that's not the right way to spell it =P. I just discovered picnik.com here. It's FABULOUS! And, I now have a blog button:

And I'm having fun adding to my photography, too!

In case you can't read the lyrics, they're from one of my life songs, Starry Night, by Chris August:
"From the Birds that Sing, In the Tallest Trees.
To the Human Life, of you and me.
From the Desert Sands, to the place we stand.
He is God of All, He is Everything.

I'm giving my life to the only One Who makes the Moon reflect the sun.
Every Starry Night, that was His design.
I'm giving my life to the only Son, Who was and is and yet to come
Let the praises ring, 'cause He is everything

From the Autumn Leaves, that will ride the breeze
to the Faith it takes, to pray and sing
from the painted sky, to my plank filled eye
He is God of all, He is everything

I'm giving my life to the only One Who makes the Moon reflect the sun.
Every Starry Night, that was His design.
I'm giving my life to the Only Son, Who was and is and yet to come
Let the praises ring, 'cause He is everything.

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
I believe

I'm giving my life to the only One Who makes the Moon reflect the sun
I'm giving my life to the only Son, Who was and is and yet to come

I'm giving my life to the only One Who makes the Moon reflect the sun.
On that  Starry Night, He changed my life.
I'm giving it all to the only Son, Who gave me hope, when I had none.
